An example of rhyming CVC words with the ending /-ig/.

Parents & Instructors,

After your young learner has mastered the letter-sound relationships, it is time to start reading CVC words. CVC words are three vowel words that consist of a consonant-vowel-consonant. A beginning reader must develop competency in the following areas:

  1. initial sounds: the link between letters and sounds

  2. rhyming: recognizing words with the same ending

  3. blending: pulling together individual sounds in words

  4. segmenting: breaking words down into individual sounds
