Story Time:
Let's Put It All Together!
Parents & Instructors,
Once your young reader is familiar with letter sounds and the basics of CVC blending and segmenting, they are ready to experiment with short phonics stories. Please support and guide your learner through these stories as they will encounter words that they are not yet familiar with. Follow these steps when beginning to read with your young learner:
-
Read-aloud: First, read the story aloud. Engage the reader with the illustrations.
-
Guided reading: Encourage your young learner to read along with you. Guide them through the story and encourage them to sound out the CVC words.
-
Independent reading: Step back and allow your reader to take the reigns.

Progress Evaluation Rubric
How is your young reader doing? At this time in a Road to Reading, your learner should have become familiar with letter sounds, blending and segmenting CVC words, and practical application of reading skills. The rubric below has been created to assess skills in the three following areas:
1.) phonemic awareness, 2.) phonological awareness, and 3.) reading fluency. Reading is a long road to mastery, but the evaluation rubric is made to provide insight into how young learners are progressing in the initial steps of reading fluency. If your reader needs to strengthen their reading skills further, you may continue to refer back to the rubric to track their progress.
